Mi Alebrije

Reed Quintet
Program Notes
Mi Alebrije is a piece for reed quintet in one movement. Divided into two main sections, the piece explores the duality between apprehension and courage. The first section, measures 1-84, is highly contrapuntal with slow unwinding material. Each voice mimics the careful craftsmanship of Mi Alebrije, in reflection to the discovery of myself. The deliberation of each intricate detail is met by a sense of apprehension, which is portrayed by the asymmetrical phrase lengths and offset melodic figures, resulting in uncertain harmonies. It is not until the second section, in measures 84-179, where the piece picks up speed and all the voices act as one unit. This intricate congruence marks Mi Alebrije coming into its true form as my spiritual guide. Just as the players must do, I take a leap of courage into the unfolding future, trusting Mi Alebrije every step of the way.
