A Certain Slant of Light was inspired by an Emily Dickinson poem titled; There’s a Certain Slant of Light. The piece circles around the use of small motivic fragments to develop the ideas. These fragments reach several tonal areas that explore various harmonic possibilities to emphasize text from the poem. The poem to me has a somber and lonely tone to it, as the piece progresses it sounds as if it has a happy ending, but the music ends alone. Almost exactly as it started, the piece concludes imagining what it could be.
